Director Statement
In 2022, I was lucky enough to co-found a small filmmaking collective called Downtime, where some friends and I helped support each other in making low budget films. During this process, which was very rewarding, I watched several friends dig deep and create some really brilliant work. I was so inspired that I knew I had to dig deeper as a filmmaker too.
I wanted to explore my feelings of being moved by a personal relationship to a piece of art. There’s no experience quite like having a painting, book, or film speak directly to you; you may feel different, like the art has changed you, but there’s no way to quantify that. You may not even have the tools necessary to explain it, but that doesn’t mean the experience isn’t real. It was out of these feelings that the characters of Dale and Theresa were born.
Personally, I believe that art can be magical and life-changing and that, if you can open yourself up to it, the right stuff can and will find you at the right time.

Patrick Koehle is a filmmaker and co-founder of Downtime Collective – a group of independent filmmakers based in Brooklyn, NY. He has made several music videos and frequently collaborates with peers on super low budget projects, wearing many hats (gaffer, grip, camera operator, assistant director, editor, stunt coordinator, actor) and always searching for unique ways to achieve creative visions with limited resources.
