Director Statement

The Mountain is a surreal comedy in which protagonist Matthew struggles to get through his day as his inner fears, self-sabotage, insecurities and sense of failure ambush him at the doctors, on the bus, and in his own kitchen. Not only do they take posssession of the doctor and fellow bus passengers but also the doctor’s desk lamp, an innocent rucksack (or is it?) and a carton of milk that he climbed a mountain to procure.

The theme of mental health generally and men’s mental health specifically is a disastrously taboo topic still today. The Mountain is a film that aims to bring about a conversation about mental health in a new way. This film uses comedy elements and genre to conjure the difficulty of experiencing feelings that do not chime with one’s surrounding world and the people in it.
