Synopsis

Tony Chuy is a 70-year-old Praying Mantis martial arts master, who has been teaching martial arts in Chinatown, New York for 40 years. Having fled from Hong Kong to the United States in 1969, he has used his praying mantis martial arts to preserve his identity and as a means to the realization of self-worth in American society as a Chinese-American.

Director Biography

Lyuwei Chen is a graduate student at New York University and a documentary filmmaker from Hangzhou, China.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in music editing and beginning her master’s program in musicology at the Communication University of China, she found her lifelong passion, documentary filmmaking, when she worked as a music documentary director for China Central Television’s Folk Music program.

Following her passion, she went to Zhejiang TV Station to be a video journalist after graduation. Her long-form documentary film The Strength of a Father won “Best Documentary” at the Peony TV Awards, the highest award in Zhejiang province.

Her work focuses on social issues, personal perspectives, and family dynamics. Committed to non-fiction storytelling, She want to make compelling documentaries to touch people worldwide.
