Synopsis

In a rapidly gentrifying Queens NYC, Maliki — a young Jazz musician — sets out on a journey to continue his father’s legacy and reopen his famous Jazz club.

Along the way he meets Afeni, a passionate, yet homesick actress from Jamaica.

Director Statement

The idea for the Sound of Southside was conceived in a cramped apartment, filled to the brim with Jazz artists. While the musicians worked on the score for my first film “April Again” back in 2018, I sat witness for hours as colorful language and insightful conversations bounced off of the walls. By combining the creative energy that I experienced that day, with the social and cultural themes that I’ve picked up while working at a Nonprofit Arts center in the heart of Jamaica Queens, this story was born.

The Sound of Southside was a community effort. Local organizations, small businesses and everyday people are the reasons that this story came to life. I did not take this commitment and responsibility lightly. I hope you have as much fun watching this film as we did making it.
