Director Statement

As a queer director, my vision for August & Ebony extends beyond storytelling; it’s a powerful testament to the significance of chosen families. The narrative, centered around a queer couple and their best friend turned co-parent, not only challenges societal norms but also amplifies the diverse ways in which people cultivate profound and loving connections.

In this short film, the characters of August, Ebony, and Justin transcend the screen, embodying the importance of representation and relatability. Their story is a mirror reflecting the lived experiences of the queer community, providing a narrative that speaks authentically to the complexities of love, identity, and unconventional family structures.

Moreover, August & Ebony carries cultural weight, particularly for the queer community and Black audiences. By showcasing a queer narrative within the context of a Black storyline, the film becomes a cultural touchstone, fostering visibility and understanding. It’s not merely a story; it’s a cultural bridge, inviting audiences to connect with characters whose experiences resonate with the intersections of race, sexuality, and chosen family dynamics.
In essence, August & Ebony is a cinematic journey that goes beyond entertainment; it’s a celebration of love, resilience, and the profound impact of representation in both the queer and Black communities.
