Synopsis

For centuries, women have had hid their fierceness, suppressing their “Dark Feminine”, for fear of judgment from the patriarchy. The Road to Lilith is a coming-of-age story for the middle-aged, a new declaration of independence for anyone who has lost their voice and is ready to risk it all to find it again.

The film follows Olivia Sanchez, an overworked and underappreciated wife and special needs mother. Like the generations of women who came before Olivia, she was taught to bury her needs and emotions, putting others before herself. So much so that she delays getting a diagnosis for her troubled vocal cords. When she finally gets the news, she is devastated to learn she will never be able to sing again. After years of postponing her music career, Olivia looks upon her life with discontentment wondering what could have been.

The Road to Lilith serves as a rescue mission for any person feeling dissatisfied or disempowered; reminding everyone to heed their sacred inner voice. We need to recover and reclaim all the parts of ourselves. We should aspire to live our lives unapologetically before it’s too late.

Director Statement

I have always been passionate about bringing underrepresented voices to the forefront of the film industry.

When I first read the script for The Road to Lilith, I immediately connected with the deeply personal story of a mother who loses her voice. I thought it serendipitous that the writer and I had shared the stage as teenagers in youth theater productions, writing and performing plays that allowed us to express our deepest fears, observations, and hopes for the future. From a very early age we both learned the importance of creating art and the power of using our voices, in any capacity.

While Ms. Diaz and I went on to forge different paths in the industry, we were both mothers who had to some degree, experienced the same significant loss. We had both been taught to put our needs aside until we couldn’t do it anymore. This story was our opportunity to join forces and create a film that is representative of the communities we are passionate about.

I am especially proud to have orchestrated a piece that has been a vehicle to represent the disability community in front and behind the camera. My own experience as an educator and facilitator working with the very young to the very elderly of all abilities has been a great source of pride. That is why I am excited to create films for anyone who feels unheard or unseen. I want to tell human stories; stories of inspiration and inspirational characters with faults, and shortcomings that fuel inclusivity and reflect the world we live in.
