Benzion Balmin

Festival Associate

Benzion Balmin, born in Brooklyn and raised in Manhattan, grew up in an artistic household—his mother a poet and his father a draftsman. While they encouraged him to follow their passions, he gravitated toward film. In high school at Manhattan Hunter Science, he founded the Cinema Club, which enabled him to join Ghetto Film School, a 30-month intensive program where he honed his filmmaking skills. While attending he wrote and directed his short film “Pennyhead” and collaborated with other fellows on their films.

After graduating in 2020 during the pandemic, he pursued hands-on experience in the industry, working on major productions like Madame Web, Walking Dead: Dead City, and A Complete Unknown as an Additional Production Assistant. He continued working on small sets with his friends on the side, gathering experience in the Art and Camera Departments.

Now attending BMCC, he plans to transfer to Brooklyn College and get a Bachelor’s Degree majoring in Film. Through BMCC, he joined the Reelworks MediaMkers program  which connected him to the Queens World Film Festival. Working for a film festival for the first time is exciting, and he is looking forward to being part of this community. Benzion’s long term dream is to continue writing and directing his own surreal films about the human experience.
