Sheila Lewendowski
Founder of Chocolate Factory & Cultural Leader
Dynamic nonprofit executive, educator, and civic advocate with 35+ years of experience leading arts, community, and policy initiatives across New York. Founding Executive Director (Emerita as of June 2025) of the OBIE and Bessie award-winning Chocolate Factory Theater, internationally recognized for fostering experimental performance and artist-led innovation. Under her leadership, the organization evolved into one of the few remaining New York City institutions wholly devoted to experimental performance—an artist-founded, artist-run space that champions risk-taking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the belief that art can shape civic and cultural life.
Transitioning into public service, teaching, and civic leadership roles that expand the intersection of culture, community development, and public policy — driven by curiosity, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. Her leadership is rooted in equity and sustainability, from implementing living wages for all artists, technicians, and staff to advancing inclusive frameworks for community-centered cultural growth.
