Director Statement
It was a mundane cold day in Central Park, New York when I suddenly saw a giant bubble flying towards me. As the bubble approached me I was mesmerized. It was bigger than my body, and felt like it was about to engulf me. It touched my hands and this beautiful piece of art vanished in split second. As I walked down the stairs I saw a mysterious man with his soap bucket and sticks making these giant bubbles. I stopped at that moment and simply watched this man create these beautiful giant bubbles. Suddenly, I felt like a curious kid again. Each bubble gave me a sense of being present and how beautiful the simple thing in life are.
Director Biography
Prabhat Gurung is an experienced and award-winning Nepalese filmmaker with over 6 years of experience in directing and cinematography. His works include fiction films, documentaries, commercials and music videos. In addition, he has also produced and shot videos on humanitarian issues in Nepal and the US. He worked as the cinematographer for the 2022 documentary short “The Other 700 Club” which premiered at Doc NYC.
His fiction short film, The Monk and The Rebel, was awarded the 2022 National Board of Review Grant in the U.S. His script was also the winner of the Chantal Akerman Award 2021 in the U.S. It premiered at the Americas Film Festival of New York (TAFFNY) 2023. It also won the “Jury Award” at the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival.
Most recently, “Breaking the Silence”, a Public Service Announcement where he worked as the cinematographer won an Emmy Award for Public Service Announcement- Spanish 2024. He is currently working on his debut feature as a writer/director, Son of a Honey Hunter, which was selected in Produire Au Sud- Film Lab South Asia 2023. He holds an MFA in Film from The City College of New York, and a BA from Caldwell University, where he studied Communication and Media Studies.
