Synopsis
WE KEEP US SAFE features portraits of five activists in the 2020 NYC Black Lives Matter Movement. This short film profiles Qween Jean, a trans activist fighting for trans visibility in the BLM Movement. Qween Jean, a costume designer, rose to be a leading figure in the NYC BLM movement creating safe spaces, empowerment, and family for the LGBTQ community. WE KEEP US SAFE provides a personal journey of activism in the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

Director Statement
My filmmaking purpose is to give voice to those unheard.I prefer my work to be used as tools to help communities, students, and audiences comprehend and educate challenging subject matters. I enjoy the research process of digging into archives to tell a story and the personal connection earned by trust when filming a subject. I have always been drawn to the visual storytelling medium expressed through filmmaking.
Director Biography
Shawn Batey is an activist and multimedia filmmaker whose work explores Black culture, history, and environment. She is an award-winning filmmaker with over 25 years experience as a Producer and Director of documentary films. Her documentary films are distributed by Third World Newsreel and Kweli TV. Shawn, a native of St. Louis, resides in Harlem in New York City.
Her feature length documentary, Changing Face of Harlem, shot over a decade, 2000 – 2010, examines the revitalization of Harlem through the lens of residents and small business owners. Her work has been shown nationwide at film festivals, Maysles Documentary Center, MOMA, on college campuses and more.
