Director Statement
We are living through strange, unpredictable times – both the world at large, and on a micro level as a global community of artists. With continuing advancements in technology, an increasing emphasis on corporatism, and the deterioration of the natural world, I believe it is more important than ever to create and share art from a place of love that inspires empathy, captures the beauty of our planet, and provides an optimistic perspective of humanity’s place in the world.
“Paint Me Blue” is a film that was born out of a desire to explore the relationship between love, art, and reality – I wrote the script specifically for my two dear friends, Melannie Vásquez Lara and Taylor Petracek, and together we immersed ourselves into a months-long rehearsal process through their respective art forms (movement and dance for Melannie, painting for Taylor) as well as their own perspectives on love, art, and humanity. “Paint Me Blue” continued to develop with the many contributions of our creative team to become the film that it is today, which not only examines the interconnections of art and love, but also explores our own individualistic evolutions – how we learn to understand ourselves within the societies we are born into, and how the legacies we choose to leave behind influence who we become.
Ultimately, it is my hope that “Paint Me Blue” can serve as an inspiration for people to live their lives more deeply, hold dear their loved ones more fully, and recognize our shared humanity over misunderstandings or conflict. Life can be very complex and overwhelming, but I believe that love and art – two forces inherently intertwined – have the power to shape the world into a more beautiful place.
