Synopsis
The animated film Sisterhood uses an abandoned house from childhood as a metaphor of home and stability. The story, written in the form of a dialogue between sisters, as signifiers of past and present, describes an intimate experience of early maturing from a child’s perspective. The bond between sisters freezes time, capturing the emotional transitions that shape the landscape of a dissolving country.

Director
Jelena Prljević is a visual artist from Serbia, based in New York, whose practice exists in the intersection between drawing, animation, and installation. A natural storyteller, she builds her narratives through the layering of light, erasure, and the regenerative power of shadows. Prljević’s first short animated film “Sisterhood” was premiered at the 13th AthensAnimFest in Athens (GR), and was officially selected by ProFiFest 2018, International Film Festival in Prokuplje (SRB); SEE a Paris 2018, South East European Film Festival in Paris (FR); and Balkanima 2018, European Animated Film Festival in Belgrade (SRB). Jelena’s collaborative animation projects “Be Angry, Man” and “Seesaw” were featured at Athens Animfest, Athens (GR), Fantoche 13th International Animation Film Festival, Baden (CH), 3rd Chennai International Short Film Festival (CISFF), Chennai (IN); A-FestFilm 2016, Tirana (AL); Zlin Film festival, Zlin (CZ), Kocevje Film Autumn, Kocevje (SLO); Internationales Filmfestival SCHLINGEL, Chemnitz (DE); Cinema City International Film Festival, Novi Sad; Balkanima 2014, 11th European Animated Film Festival, Belgrade; and Museum of Contemporary Art, Novi Sad (SRB). “Seesaw”, a short animated film directed by Mina Cvetinović, where Prljević worked on set design, character creation, and animation, was awarded as the best animation movie for 2015 at SEE a Paris 2015 Festival, Paris (FR). Her most recent projects include 2019 “Safe Ground to Land on”, solo show at Galerie Liusa Wang in Paris; 2018 “Neither Here nor There”, The William Benton Museum of Art in Storrs, an art installation awarded by The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant; 2017 “The Red Chair” devised theater project at Dixon Place, New York; and Artspace, New Haven. Prljević holds an MFA in Studio Art in the Art & Art History Department, School of Fine Arts at the University of Connecticut (USA) and a BFA from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad (SRB).
