Director Statement
As a filmmaker, I feel like it is my duty to confront the challenges that surround us. CAPIO is about how our society’s unconditional love of technology leaves us vulnerable to political and economic manipulation and loss of privacy and freedom.
The explosive growth of the online world has changed not just our lifestyle, but also the way we relate to each other and perceive the world around us. My film offers a vision of a near-future world in which our digital dependency threatens to make us all less human.
Once technology has insinuated itself into our lives without restrictions or oversight, it can become nearly impossible to tear ourselves free again. By relying too heavily on algorithms and technology, humans risk losing their ability to connect and empathize with each other, and to keep in close touch with their own dreams, intuition, and spiritual center.
Director Biography
Aleksandar Kostic is a genre-blending film director, cinematographer, writer, and producer based in New York City. His visionary films often incorporate his own experiences, blending fact and fiction, the mysterious and the mystical, the paranoid and the paranormal, and extrasensory perception. Some of these experiences are captured in his latest award-winning short film, “ARTSANITY,” and his upcoming first feature sci-fi film, “CAPIO.”
“CAPIO” offers sharp social commentary on the impact of the unprecedented infiltration of technology into our daily lives.
His distinctive cinematography style has been praised by the New York Times, LA Times, and Hollywood Reporter for films such as “Allure,” and documentaries showcasing the Secretary-General of the U.N., Javier Perez de Cuellar, and former owner of CBGB’s, Hilly Kristal.
Kostic’s experimental film, “Persistence of Memory,” premiered at the opening of the MaerzMusik festival in Berlin, Germany, in conjunction with Joan La Barbara’s concert work of the same name.
The theme of the festival was “Cage and Consequences,” celebrating the 100th anniversary of John Cage’s birth.
Aleksandar’s award-winning work has been screened internationally at the PÖFF Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, the Museum of the Moving Image with Queens World Film Festival, the Philip K Dick Film Festival, the MaerzMusik Festival in Berlin, the Anthology archive NYC, and others.
