📍 Sac’s Place (Kaufman Astoria Studios, Queens)
Queens World hosts the Filmmakers Breakfast, a peer-to-peer gathering built for authentic conversation and community. Attending filmmakers will sit alongside industry professionals including Anita Raswant (Lead Programmer, Nantucket & DOCNYC), Katrina Medoff (Co-Executive Director & Co-Founder, Moonshot Initiative), and Brian F. Lee (City National Bank), who will help spark the first question of the morning.
Over coffee and a complimentary breakfast at Sac’s Place, located in the restored former commissary of Kaufman Astoria Studios, where actors from the silent and early talking film era dined between takes, we’ll dive into the challenges and opportunities facing independent film: balancing art and commerce, navigating production hurdles, building outreach and collaborative networks, experimenting with distribution, and imagining what comes next for our field.
Conversation Starters
- Where do you feel the most friction between show and business—between creating the work and sustaining the work?
- What practical roadblocks—permits, contracts, insurance, access—have you run into, and what solutions or workarounds have you discovered?
- Beyond making the film, how do you get it seen? What outreach strategies, partnerships, or grassroots efforts have helped your work reach audiences?
- Distribution is shifting fast—streaming, pay-per-view, theatrical, community screenings. What models are working for you (or not), and what experiments do you see on the horizon?
- Looking forward, what role should independent film play in shaping the future of our industry—and what’s next for all of us?
Instead of panels or speeches, this is a chance to share experiences, trade strategies, and connect as a community. Additional guests will be announced from across the industry, including producers, entertainment lawyers, designers, and more.
Be in the room, be part of the conversation.
